Three primary areas of concern:
Managing growth and its impacts
Attention to community health and well being
- Keep our land, air and water clean
- Protecting surface owners from the impacts of drilling and extraction operations
- Affordable housing as a priority
- Plan ahead to re-establish a rail connection to the south to lower our dependence on
fuel-inefficient trucks Building a transportation system designed to minimize future energy price shocks
- Bike and pedestrian-friendly development in urbanizing areas of the county
- Increase frequency of rural public transit
- Require transit-oriented development on our main corridors
- Health care
Peter's Track Record
Vague statements about leadership are insufficient. Qualifications come from how you spend yourtime and what results you have caused. Here are some of Peter’s:
- Initiated and expanded Road Runner Transit, a rural transit system connecting Ignacio, Bayfield,
Forest Lakes and Durango. It takes cars off the roads and save riders lots of money. Peter’s leadership
brought together participation of Bayfield, Forest Lakes, Ignacio, La Plata County and the
Southern Ute Indian Tribe. - Volunteer member, Durango Planning Commission, 2004-present
- Acting Co-executive Director of Southern Ute Community Action Programs during financial
difficulties. SUCAP’s budget is now $6.6 million and it employs over 130 people. - Raised money and developed programs in job training, youth development, drug-alcohol
treatment and prevention, senior services, child development, mental health, and highway safety. - Directed a regional affordable housing organization (Southwest Community Resources, now
Housing Solutions for the Southwest) during the 1990s. During his tenure, Peter raised money
and managed programs to rehabilitate homes, make them energy efficient, help families avoid or
recover from homelessness. Peter’s legacy of new affordable housing in La Plata County stands
at 71 units (plus three done later as part of a job training program for high school dropouts). - Developed and managed award winning job training programs that placed over 1,000 people in jobs.
- Initiated a career-oriented mentorship program for inner-city youth.
- Edited two newspapers, one for public school parents, another covering neighborhood activism
- Like another current candidate for elected office, Peter worked as a community organizer for
four years.
